Services for CSC telecommunications technician Saturday

Chadron State College employees are mourning the death of one of their coworkers this week.

The death of John Shafer, CSC telecommunications technician, was reported at his home east of Chadron late Sunday. Services will be Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center.

The Dawes County Attorney’s Office reported that a preliminary investigation indicated that Shafer died of natural causes, but an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday in Scottsbluff.

Shafer, 46, had been employed at CSC since September 2003. Through his position in CSC’s extended campus programs, he provided research, installation, maintenance and support for the institution’s mediated classrooms and interactive television system. He also was an integral part of orientation for CSC’s new faculty members.

Both on and off campus, he was known as a skilled musician. He served as bass player for the Bald Mountain Rounders, a Chadron bluegrass band, and often performed music with his wife Jolana, whom he married in March.

In addition to Jolana, he is survived by his son, Jessie.
