Story Catcher writing workshop registration opens

Workshop faculty members include Dr. Steven Coughlin, CSC assistant professor of English and Humanities, whose first book of poetry was recently published.

General workshop and retreat tuition is $150, which includes access to all open workshops and special sessions. Although there is no deadline for general registration, participants are encouraged to sign up early in order to receive materials and notices prior to the workshop. Students and Mari Sandoz Heritage Society Members receive a 20 percent discount. A limited number of scholarships are available for student writers.

Anna Keesey, a graduate of Stanford University and the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, is the 2015 Writer in Residence. She will present “Lollygagging: Emerson and Me and You,” a lecture with emphasis on writerly craft and technique, at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 12 in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. Her keynote speech, “Landscapes and Loss: Readings from ‘Little Century’” will be at 6 p.m. the same day.

Her work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies, including Best American Short Stories.  She is also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship.

An advance workshop with Keesey is available for an additional $100 fee, due by May 30. Space in this special workshop is limited to eight writers.

The last day of the festival, June 14, is open to the public and will feature an 8:30 a.m. special presentation by Poe Ballantine, Chadron author of “Love and Death on the Howling Plains of Nowhere,” a memoir.
